Returning students will also need to submit an application. Returning students are students who once attended Saddleback College, but have not attended classes during the fall 2009 semester.

Saddleback College Forensics Team Sweeps Ray Dahlin Tournament

Led by Coaches Larry Radden and Heidi Ochoa, the Saddleback College Forensics Team took first place at the Ray Dahlin Tournament on Friday, November 20^th at Grossmont College in San Diego. The Gauchos won more events than all other teams and a majority of the competitors are headed to the Phi Rho Pi National Forensics Tournament in New Orleans in April 2010.

Dr. Tod A. Burnett, President of Saddleback College, stated, “Congratulations to our forensics students and coaches for their brilliant performance at the Ray Dahlin Tournament. Saddleback College has a proud tradition of winning forensics teams and this year’s team is no exception. I look forward to seeing our students shine at nationals.”

Larry Radden, Saddleback College Speech Professor and Co-Director of the forensics team, stated, “Our team looks to be one of the strongest and most focused we’ve had in years! We are so lucky for the strong support demonstrated by President Burnett, the college’s Associated Student Government, and our speech department. I also feel that the addition of Heidi Ochoa as our new professor and co-director provided the perfect combination to our team.”

Heidi Ochoa stated, “I am so proud of our wonderful and talented students who are impressing coaches and competitors across the nation. The Saddleback College Forensics Team has a very successful history and I’m honored to work as a new coach with this extraordinary team.”

The Saddleback Forensics Team was established in the 1970s and prides itself on offering students the ability to create innovative arguments for future writing and speaking engagements, to strengthen their critical thinking skills, and to better communicate with others.

The Ray Dahlin Tournament is held in honor of the late professor who was the head of Palomar College’s speech and theatre department and led his team to win four national speech and debate championships.

Saddleback College Offers Career Training for In-Demand Health Care Jobs

In partnership with Boston Reed College, in February 2010 Saddleback College will begin offering new health care programs through the college’s Community Education Department designed to prepare students for a career in high-demand health care jobs. The programs will offer training and certification of completion in three areas: pharmacy technician, orthopedic technician, and optometric technician.

Dr. Tod A. Burnett, President of Saddleback College, stated, “Saddleback College recognizes the need to provide our community with training to give them an edge in the job market. Offering these life-changing health care programs through Saddleback College Community Education demonstrates our commitment to providing superior career building resources to our community and students.”

Estella Castillo-Garrison, Saddleback College Director of Community Education, stated, “Saddleback College Community Education is constantly striving to develop and offer the finest and most current educational programs. Our goal is to not only offer programs as a general service to our community, but to make sure valuable programs, like career training, are available when residents in our community need them the most.”

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the healthcare industry is the largest employment sector in the country and has created 597,000 new jobs since the onset of the recession. The seemingly “recession-proof” growth of this industry has compelled many people to look to the healthcare industry for employment and new careers.

Students in the pharmacy, orthopedic, and optometric programs will attend a required number of classroom hours and hands-on externship hours at a local healthcare facility to ensure a complete learning experience. Upon successful completion of a program, the graduate will receive a certificate of completion and will be fully prepared for any testing or requirements necessary to enter a career in healthcare.

Registration is now open and flexible schedules are offered for busy adults. Textbooks and externship placement are included with the program fee. A no-cost “Discover a Career in Healthcare” workshop is available at Saddleback College for those wishing to learn more about careers in healthcare, training programs, prerequisites, and externships.
