Sexual Assault Awareness Month is observed annually during the month of April. To increase awareness on the Saddleback College campus, the Student Health and Wellness Center has collaborated with Waymakers to host the Clothesline Project on Tuesday, April 16 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Quad.

The Clothesline Project was founded by Dr. Dawn Foor in 2001 to provide a visual representation of the prevalence of violence within our community. Using a collection of multi-colored t-shirts, they allow participants to bring awareness, education, and solidarity to the community for victims of crime. Each color represents a different type of crime: sexual assault, child sexual abuse, human trafficking, assault or harassment to those who identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community, sexual harassment, domestic violence, and homicide. The t-shirts in the project are created by survivors or in honor of someone who has experienced violence. The project is meant to create empathy and demonstrate the long-lasting effects of sexual assault on survivors and families. In addition, survivors are empowered in sharing their experience, defining it to their comfort level, to inspire hope in other survivors, and to remind them they are not alone.

Along with the t-shirt activity, the Waymakers’ Sexual Assault Prevention team and Sexual Assault Advocates will attend the event to create a space for survivors and loved ones of survivors to participate and provide resources and information about the services Waymakers offers.
