Phi Theta Kappa
An Outstanding Opportunity for High-Achieving Students
- Fellowship
- Leadership
- Scholarship
- Service
Our History:
On the auspicious day of Friday, December 13, 1996, Phi Theta Kappa,
the international honor society for two-year colleges, chartered
a new chapter at Saddleback College. With 370 inductees, Beta Epsilon
Beta became the organization's largest charter chapter.
Involvement and Benefits:
Phi Theta Kappa's four hallmarks of fellowship, leadership, scholarship
and service have made it one of the most outstanding student organizations
worldwide. It provides a wealth of opportunities in all these areas,
and members are welcome to participate in all to the extent they
wish. Members have access to numerous scholarships nationwide, including
almost $30 million in scholarships reserved by transfer institutions
for Phi Theta Kappans exclusively. Phi Theta Kappans receive transcript
notation and a special diploma seal, and receive special recognition
at graduation.
Eligibility:
Saddleback students who have at least 12 units completed at Saddleback,
a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5, have followed the Saddleback College
Student Code of Conduct, and are citizens in good standing of their
country, are invited to join. Both part-time and full-time students
are eligible.
Meetings and Events:
Meetings are scheduled so that both day and evening students can
become active in Phi Theta Kappa's many activities (two officers
are dedicated to serving the evening student population). Members
have visited the Museum of Tolerance, attended a performance of
the L.A. Philharmonic, participated in literacy programs at the
Mission Viejo Public Library, and gone to several TV show tapings
as social and fundraising events. On campus, as part of its commitment
to service, the local chapter presented speakers on the Holocaust
and HIV awareness, read to children at the Saddleback College Child
Development Center, and engaged in other service and fellowship
activities.
Saddleback College's Commitment to Honors
Education:
Phi Theta Kappa is a major addition to Saddleback's existing portfolio
of honor societies, which includes Alpha Gamma
Sigma and discipline-specific organizations such as the psychology
honor society Psi Beta.
