PICTURE YOURSELF AT UC BERKELEY

Due to budget limitations, UC Berkeley is not able to make any personal visits to community colleges this season. However, they have created a "one-stop" website for prospective students to discover what UC Berkeley has to offer and find out what it takes to become a Golden Bear. On this webpage, students can complete an interest form and receive login information for their own personalized webpage. Plus, their names will be added to the Admission's email list so they can receive event invitations, advising opportunities, and admissions news to help in their countdown to applying to Berkeley.

TRANSFER ADMISSION AT EMERSON COLLEGE

Greetings from the Transfer Office at Emerson College.

Each year, Emerson welcomes approximately 300 transfer students from two-and four-year colleges across the country and around the world. While they may have followed different paths to Emerson, all have arrived with the desire to be part of a community of creative, motivated people with a passion for communication and the arts. As you begin your year and start talking with your students about their next steps, I want to make you aware of some of the exciting things taking place on our campus.

New President
On July 1, 2011, the Emerson community welcomed Lee Pelton as the 12th president of Emerson College. He spent the past 13 years as president of Willamette University in Oregon. The parent of an Emerson undergraduate, Dr. Pelton holds a Ph.D. in English from Harvard University and a bachelor’s degree in English and psychology from Wichita State University. We all look forward to the fresh ideas and perspective President Pelton will bring to campus. He says, “I’ve watched Emerson’s evolution with great interest and awe, and I will honor the past, while looking forward to the future.”

Emerson in the News

The fall season in higher education brings a variety of rankings and lists. We are proud to say that Emerson ranks highly among top colleges and universities in a number of these listings. The College’s Department of Visual and Media Arts was named one of the world’s 25 best film schools by the Hollywood Reporter; Emerson was named number two on Newsweek's list of colleges with the "Most Artistic Students"; and for those students interested in studying in one of the communications fields, USA Today recently named Emerson among the top 20 colleges in the country making good use of social media.

BRANDMAN UNIVERSITY ANNOUNCES VETERANS2COLLEGE PROGRAM

BRANDMAN UNIVERSITY ANNOUNCES VETERANS2COLLEGE PROGRAM,

THANKS TO $2.1 MILLION GIFT FROM THE BRANDMAN FOUNDATION

Donation Provides Accessible, Quality Education Opportunities for Military Veterans

IRVINE, Calif. – January 21, 2011 – Brandman University, a private, regionally accredited, non-profit higher education institution serving working professionals, recently announced the introduction of the Veterans2College (V2C) program, which was made possible by a $2.1 million gift from the Brandman Foundation.  The V2C program focuses on increasing accessibility of quality educational opportunities to veterans by offering specially designed courses, student support and networking facilities that will develop academic, social and career skills supporting the completion of college degrees and future job placements.

“Education for military personnel is a key focus for the Brandman Foundation because of Saul Brandman’s background in the military and his understanding of the importance of a college education to build successful careers after serving in the military,” said Joyce Brandman, president of the Board of Directors of the Brandman Foundation.  “The establishment of Brandman University’s Veterans2College program will give veterans access to high-quality education options and help them achieve their personal and professional goals.”

Military veterans are an underserved population in higher education.  According to U.S. Census Bureau 2008 statistics, only 26 percent of approximately 23 million veterans in the United States have a college degree.  With the number of veterans continuing to increase, programs such as the V2C will help serve the unique needs of veterans who require additional flexibility, specialized support and tailored curriculum to boost persistence and ultimately success in completing a college degree.

Developed in collaboration with the University of Arizona and based on a model program piloted there, Brandman’s V2C program offers specially designed courses, student support and networking facilities for returning veterans, helping them to develop academic, social and career skills that support the pursuit and completion of a college degree and increase their success in future job placements.  According to Student Veterans of America’s Veteran Center Handbook, veterans need assistance in handling psychological barriers that can hamper successful reentry into civilian activities. Recognizing the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder, the program utilizes the knowledge and experience from military service, in addition to teaching college-level skills, and directly addresses problems that can lead to high student drop out rates.

With Brandman University’s proven track record in educating military students since 1958, the university aims to make a substantial difference in helping veterans overcome these barriers and realize success in post-military careers.  The university recently reported a 68-percent graduation rate among active-duty military students, including those on multiple deployments.  This completion rate dwarfs the rates of many other military education institutions and illustrates Brandman’s relentless focus on student success.

“Despite military education benefits, a significant number of veterans don’t have college degrees indicating that other factors besides cost, such as access to classes and facility support, need to be addressed,” said Gary Brahm, chancellor of Brandman University.  “By offering specialized courses, flexible curriculum delivery and  support services catering to the unique needs of veterans,  Brandman’s V2C program helps military personnel  use military benefits to earn a degree and build a foundation for their future after service.”

Brandman University, originally Chapman University College, has a strong military tradition, with its founding in 1958 to meet the educational needs of military personnel at the Marine Corps Air Station El Toro in Orange County, California.  Today, Brandman provides an affordable and high-quality education to veterans and members of the armed services and their dependents with classes offered on bases in California and Washington, as well as entirely online.

CSFA, BRANDMAN UNIVERSITY INTRODUCE BACHELOR'S DEGREE FOR CALIFORNIA FIREFIGHTERS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Program provides a high-quality, flexible and affordable path to undergraduate degree and career advancement.

SACRAMENTO and IRVINE, Calif. – January 5, 2011 –  California State Firefighters’ Association (CSFA) and Brandman University today announced an exclusive relationship to offer a bachelors of arts in applied studies (BAAS) developed specifically for California’s firefighting community.  CSFA members who pursue this degree, launching this month, will enjoy a tuition discount valued at approximately $900 per course.

The Brandman degree program, developed over the past year in cooperation with CSFA, California Fire Chiefs Association, Orange County Fire Authority, Santa Ana College and others, will be offered at 23 Brandman University locations throughout the state and online.

“Today’s fire service requires the best trained personnel, and CSFA is pleased to partner with Brandman University to offer this fully accredited program to our members throughout the state,” said John Dane, executive director of CSFA.

A significant feature of the BAAS is acceptance of students’ existing community college and other fire technology units as credit toward the degree, along with the flexibility and efficiency of a year-round schedule.

Founded in 1958 and formerly known as Chapman University College, Brandman University is part of the prestigious Chapman University System and provides high-quality, innovative degree programs for working professionals.    By blending Chapman University’s heritage of academic excellence with specialized student services and flexible curriculum delivery, Brandman is a highly regarded option for working professionals and community college transfers seeking meaningful degrees that have a reputation for quality.  The university also provides an affordable private education alternative for students unable to obtain the classes they need to graduate in state university systems and public institutions.

“The partnership with CSFA exemplifies the reason we established Brandman University,” said Chancellor Gary Brahm.  “Our mission is to create flexible and targeted programs that benefit the specialized needs of adult students who want to advance their education, but have a variety of other responsibilities.   The BAAS is a great way for California firefighters to obtain a high-quality education while maintaining their work schedules and other commitments.”
