I want to be
a middle school teacher/ 6-8 grade
Becoming a middle school teacher is very similar to becoming a high school teacher. You will need to earn a single subject credential. This path begins
with transferring to a university to complete
a Bachelor’s Degree which may or may not be in the subject that you aim to teach, the completion of either a Subject Matter Preparation Program or the state approved subject matter exam and the passing of a test called the CBEST. Each credentialing program has different requirements, yet it is common for them to request for you to have over a 2.75 GPA in your last 60 units, at least two fieldwork experiences with the age-group that you plan to teach, and letter of recommendation. Cal State Fullerton has set up a great document for those preparing to teach middle or high school. You can link to it here. Also, one should always consider increasing one’s marketability through opening up options to teach several subjects. Cal State Fullerton’s Center for Careers in Teaching has offered some advice for students seeking to do so here. Open teaching positions can be found at EdJoin.
