Valerie SeniorTitle: Instructional Technologist
Department: Distance Education (SC)
Division: Div of Online Educ & Learning Resources
Organization: Saddleback College
I've worked at Saddleback College for over 17 years. During my time here, I have had the privilege of working with some of the very best faculty.
In 2012, I was awarded Classified Employee of the Year. I've recently completed the Quality Matters Peer Reviewer Program and continue to attend QM Professional Development workshops. I've attended and highly recommend@ONE's Online Certification Program. And in 2014, I was elected to be one of the Blackboard Exemplary Course Reviewers.
One of my many jobs is to provide instructional design consultation and expertise to faculty and staff. I also assist faculty in producing, developing, and implementing innovative and effective online course materials including multimedia elements, digital learning, and other media as technologies evolve. I collaborate with faculty to ensure instructional integrity of distance learning course development utilizing systematic design with clear standards and objectives.
I'm also very involved in the planning, design, implementation and presenting of a variety of faculty professional development programs on the effective and innovative use of instructional technologies as well as student-centered resources that support online success and retention.
I design, maintain, and update web-based learning guides, tutorial, and other digital and printed materials that effectively promote online learning. I identify and maintain effective tools and techniques necessary to expand student access and success in the online environment.
One of my passions is to help faculty create universally accessible content. I regularly consult with our campus Accessibility Specialist to assist individuals on campus to ensure Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 508 compliance in software; ensure universal designs are integrated into distance learning applications and course materials. Additionally, I coordinate and maintain the use of our DE Captioning Grant materials.
I provide leadership in professional development programs for faculty on instructional applications and related technology including giving workshops, creating online materials, media designs, mentoring, and group activities. I serve as point of contact with relevant external vendors and outside agencies as needed; serve as technical liaison with campus Technology Services department. I also maintain, update and administer our college LMS, Blackboard.
And last but not least, I'm active in operational planning for the online learning program to meet college-wide, program-level, and accreditation goals.
