Come join us at a lecture by Dr. Amy Stanley on her award-winning new book, Stranger in the Shogun's City: A Japanese Woman and Her World. The story of an ordinary Japanese woman living during the age of samurai rule. This biography won several awards, including being chosen as a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Biography, winner of the 2020 National Book Critics Circle Award, and winner of the PEN/Jacqueline Bograd Weld Award for Biography. Through this book, Dr. Stanley brings a new approach to the study of women, Japan, and Japan's Edo period (1600-1867) in the decades just before Japan was opened to the West.

The event will be held on Monday January 30, 2023 from 12 to 1:30 pm in the BGS Mural Area (1st Floor of BGS); a Japanese-style lunch will be served. Free copies of the book will be available prior to the event on a first-come, first-serve basis in BGS 314; limit one per person.
