The Importance of Inclusion Without Assimilation

How do we create inclusive spaces in our creative communities? How do we welcome BIPOC artists in a way that doesn’t force them to abandon their heritage and their unique voice? Are BIPOC-only artistic spaces an example of reverse racism or a moral imperative?

We discuss these topics and more with a panel of prolific artists that have made it their life’s work to tackle these issues head-on by seeking out BIPOC artists and making space for them in cultural institutions where historically, they’ve either been ignored or forced to conform. Join us and learn how to put your privilege to work in support of the artists who need it most.

The Fine Arts and Media Technology program at Saddleback College is the place where the right brain gets to exercise and no constraints are placed on the imagination. As one of the largest and most cutting-edge programs nationwide, Saddleback College prepares graduates for careers in every aspect of the visual and performing arts. Along with Art, Cinema-Television-Radio, Music, Photography, Speech, and Theatre, we also offer an Entertainment and Theatre Technology certificate program. The certificate program provides students with career preparation for entry-level positions in the professional entertainment industry. Instruction is also designed to prepare students for transfer to four-year schools, as well as for employment in a specialized field upon graduation. State-of-the-art studio facilities (including a dark room, an electronic piano lab, Pro Tools HD recording studio and soundproof practice rooms), as well as extensive innovative projects, put learning into practice in the community making Saddleback College a positive choice.

Soon, the radio station, TV station, photography studio and forensics (speech and debate) lab and a journalism lab will all be on the first floor enabling students to use their creativity and talents to work in all types of media. Additionally, the new computer lab will facilitate computer classes in photography and music.
