Medical Assisting Clinical Experience (Administrative, Clinical, & Comprehensive)

Students must provide and/or pass all the following requirements to be eligible for the Medical Assisting Clinical Experience - MA 217 A, B, & C.  Any findings may affect the student’s ability to progress through or complete the program. Students are advised to start the clearance process six months in advance of placement.  Please contact Chelsey Tyson, ctyson@saddleback. edu,  for more information.  Please reference the MA roadmaps to ensure you have completed ALL required MA classes before planning on externing. All course petitions and waivers should be submitted a full semester before enrolling in MA217. If you are unsure if the course you took is equivalent to a relevant MA course, you should speak with a counselor.  Please submit the following form to substitute/waive classes - Petition for Course Substitution or Waiver-all submissions must include a course syllabus and unofficial transcript.

  • HPSO - Professional Liability Insurance 



Those entering into the clinical experience must be in adequate health to perform the duties of a medical assistant. Students will be required to obtain the following titers/immunizations/vaccines before being eligible to start the externship.

  • Measles
  • Mumps
  • Rubella
  • Varicella
  • TDAP
  • Hepatitis B
  • TB skin test (to be completed prior to receiving COVID-19 Booster to avoid delays)
  • COVID-19 vaccine/booster
  • Seasonal flu shot (when available)

Students will need to provide evidence of vaccination status not only for enrollment into the MA217 but also to take courses at the college that are in person or hybrid. For details regarding vaccination status, please visit the link here

*If your physical is completed by your outside Health Care Provider, you MUST make an appointment with the Student Health Center RN for FINAL sign-off and Program Verification Clearance Letter.
