State regulations govern the number of times a course may be repeated. Most courses completed at Saddleback College with a satisfactory grade may be repeated after a period of three years if the District requires a more recent completion of the course OR another educational institution in which a student seeks to transfer requires the course to be taken more recently than that student’s last enrollment in the course. Students who receive a "W" (withdrawal) may repeat the course; students with an "Incomplete" grade in a course may not register for the course again.
Most courses are designated as "non-repeatable," and are limited to only one enrollment. However, a student who has received a grade of D, F, or NP (No Pass) in a course taken at Saddleback College, may repeat the course only one time.
Some courses in which skill development may require more than one semester may be repeated. These courses are designated with an "R" code and a number indicating the number of times the course may be repeated. This code is listed in the college catalog following the course description. If a course is identified as a repeatable course and a student earns a grade of D, F, or NP (No Pass), the course repeat limitations do not change.
To alleviate a substandard grade in calculating the GPA, the student should retake the same course at Saddleback College or take an equivalent course at Irvine Valley College. Course equivalency will be determined by Saddleback College. A student may request to have the substandard grade disregarded in the computation of their GPA by submitting a Request for Course Repeatability Update to the Office of Admissions and Records. The previously recorded course will remain on the student's transcript and the transcript will show which course was excluded for purposes of grade-point calculation. Only the most recent course grade earned will be used in calculating the student's grade point average. If a course is identified as a repeatable course and a student earns a grade of D, F, or NC (NP), the course repeat limitations do not change.
Mandated Training Requirement
Course repetition may be permitted in instances when such repetition is necessary for a student to meet a legally mandated training requirement as a condition of continued paid or volunteer employment. A petition for this exception may be filed with the Office of Admissions and Records using this form:
Petition for Course Repetition
Such courses may be repeated for credit any number of times, regardless of whether or not substandard work was previously recorded, and the grade received each time shall be included for purposes of calculating the student's grade-point average. Petition for Special Circumstances Under special circumstances, repetition of credit courses may be permitted. In order to be considered under special circumstances, the student must file a Petition for Course Repeat through the Office of Admissions and Records prior to the start of the semester. Grades awarded for courses repeated under this provision are not considered in calculating the student's grade-point average and, in no case is the unit value of the repeated course counted more than once.
