What is the Saddleback College Mentor Collective?
The Saddleback College Mentor Collective is mentoring program for students who are entering or returning to college. The program is a partnership between Saddleback College and Mentor Collective.
Students are matched with mentors who are there to offer guidance as students acclimate to life in college. Mentors will assist mentees in navigating the many adjustments that students often face when attending college . Mentors are ready to listen, inspire, help navigate challenges, and recognize opportunities. Students will learn what to expect in school and how to approach challenges. At the same time, mentors will build their networks and develop skills to become better professionals and leaders.
Why did we start the mentoring program?
Creating supportive relationships with faculty, staff and peers can have an influential effect on college students’ academic success and overall development. Creating these relationships, especially when we are doing our work in a hybrid world, can be difficult. We wanted to create a programs that
- Reduce fears and provide campus navigation resources for first-year and returning students
- Foster a sense of belonging and feeling of community
- Promote a more fluid college adjustment period
- Develop a campus social support network
How does the program work?
Students will be invited to be a part of the program via email from the Student Development Office and Mentor Collective. Students will be matched with a peer mentor based on common interests, background, academics, and professional aspirations. To get started, students and mentors register and complete an online survey to put together a picture of interests and experiences. Check out the video below, then scroll down to learn more about finding a mentor or becoming a mentor, as well as what to expect once you're matched.
How can I participate?
It's simple. Mentors and Mentees will be invited to participate during the fall and spring semesters based on certain metrics the Student Development Office establishes. Once you receive the invite in your email, go through the steps on the Mentor Collective website to get registered by filling out your information and matching survey. You will be matched and then can start meeting to discuss various topics throughout the academic year.
