Terence Nelson is the Saddleback College Veterans Education and Transition Services (VETS) Program Coordinator and a Veterans Counselor. He developed the VETS Program in 2009 and has directed it since its inception yet in January 2016 he began the full time role coordinating the department from the faculty ranks. Prior to this role, Terence served as the Transfer, Career, and Special Programs (TC&SP) Division Dean which encompassed eleven student services and instructional departments as well as several grant funded student support initiatives. During that time, he was also the direct lead for the Career Center, Re-Entry Center, and the Veterans Education and Transition Services (VETS) Program. Prior to entering administration he worked as a general, ESL, transfer, and athletic counselor, a learning center coordinator, the Teacher Preparation Pipeline counselor, a grant writer, and track coach. Dean Nelson currently serves as the President of the Region 8 Veterans Program Directors Consortium covering 20 colleges from Mission Viejo to Glendora. He held the position of President for 3.5 years overall and is the Region 8 representative to the State Chancellors Office. Terence serves on the Southern California Army Advisory Council and has served on the Orange County Legislative Task Force. He has been recognized by OC Metro Magazine as one of the 2009 “Top 40 Under 40” in Orange County and as the 2012 “CAPED Administrator of the Year”. He is a current board member of NAVPA and is involved in many statewide and federal legislative and policy efforts. The VETS Program has been recognized by the state legislature, state senate, United States Congress, and oc Board of Supervisors. Recently, the VETS Team was awarded with one of the highest honors in the California Community College system, the 2016 Dr. John Rice Diversity and Equity Award. As a California Community College graduate, Terence has first-hand experience as to the opportunities our state's public higher education system offers and how lives can be changed through our state's community colleges.
