Terence Nelson is the Saddleback College Veterans Education and Transition Services (VETS) Program Coordinator and a Veterans Counselor. He developed the VETS Program in 2009 and has directed it since its inception yet in January 2016 he began the full time role coordinating the department and counseling in the faculty ranks. In addition, he co-authored the proposal for and served as the principal investigator for the Pathways to Completion V-CAT Innovation Award from the CA Department of Finance of $2M articulating military occupations and courses into college and transfer coursework. Prior to this role, Terence served as the Transfer, Career, and Special Programs (TC&SP) Division Dean which encompassed eleven student services and instructional departments as well as several grant funded student support initiatives. Terence currently serves as the President of the Region VIII Veterans Program Directors Consortium, covering 20 colleges from Mission Viejo to Glendora, and is the Region VIII representative to the State Chancellors Office. Terence serves on the Southern California Army Advisory Council and has served on the Orange County Legislative Task Force. He has been recognized by OC Metro Magazine as one of the 2009 “Top 40 Under 40” in Orange County and as the 2012 “CAPED Administrator of the Year”. The VETS Team was awarded with one of the highest honors in the California Community College system, the 2016 Dr. John Rice Diversity and Equity Award. As a California Community College graduate, Terence has first-hand experience as to the opportunities our state's public higher education system offers and how lives can be changed through our state's community colleges.
