About This Event
Japan Fest is a one-week celebration of Japanese culture that will be held at Saddleback College the week of October 5 through 8. This year's theme is anime. Come join our students, faculty, staff, and community for our fourth annual event!
The 2026 Japan Fest will feature a film series exploring the history of anime in Japan. All movies will be shown in CC 212. Refreshments and snacks will be provided.
Monday, October 5, from 12 to 2 p.m. in CC 212
Film: Nausiccaa and the Valley of the Wind
Come explore themes of apocalypse, monsters, nature, and environmental destruction in Studio Ghibli's first film. Lunch will be provided.
Tuesday, October 6, from 9 to 10:15 a.m. and 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. in CC 212
Film: Spirited Away
Join us for a discussion of Japanese religious beliefs in the second-largest grossing anime film to date, Spirited Away. A light breakfast will be provided.
Wednesday, October 7, from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. in CC 212
Film: Momotaro's Sea Eagles
One of two films considered to be the first full-length anime, this film was a World War II propaganda film designed for children. Discussion follows the film. A light breakfast will be provided.
Thursday, October 8, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in CC 212
Film: Ghost in the Shell (TV 1995, 2026)
Cyborgs, robots, and a dystopian future: for this special section, we will be looking at two different versions of the TV series anime Ghost in the Shell to discuss differences in how stories are told. We will conclude with an overview of the anime we have seen. Light refreshments will be provided.
In addition to the films, the Library will display books related to Anime during the month of October. The books will be available to Saddleback and IVC students to check out.
