Volume II, Second Edition
President's Greeting
Dear Faculty, Staff, and Management,
The fall semester is in full swing and I commend all of you for your hard work and dedication to our students. Not only are we providing a top-notch education and outstanding services to our students, but we're doing that and more with a watchful eye on our state budget situation. I thank all of you -- especially those in the student services and faculty who added more students to their classes -- for doing a superb job with less. Our students appreciate you and everyone on this campus appreciates all of the work that you do for the success of our students.
In addition to working on our day-to-day operations, Saddleback College is moving ahead on our strategic plan. Four strategic planning groups (Educational Development, Student Affairs, Operational Support and Resources, and College Advancement) will formulate goals under the umbrella of the four strategic directions that were set by the Consultation Council. The Strategic Directions are:
Improve Student Preparedness
Saddleback College will ensure that students gain the foundational skills necessary to complete college level work and achieve career goals.
Foster Innovation
Saddleback College will employ innovative teaching and technology to enhance instruction and student services.
Excel in College Transfers
Saddleback College will increase student transfers to four-year colleges and universities.
Enhance Resources
Saddleback College will improve its ability to expand and develop alternative sources of revenue to support college priorities.
These strategic directions will guide our planning and resource allocation for the next three years.
In addition to strategic planning, we are also working diligently on the college's accreditation, with our commission visit scheduled for next October. I thank everyone on our four accreditation standard committees for their work, and I especially thank the committee chairs -- Professor Diane Pestolesi (Standard I), Professor Tony Teng (Standard II), Fiscal Services Director Carol Hilton (Standard III) and Professor Carmen Dominguez (Standard IV) for their leadership and thoroughness in ensuring that their standards are complete.
In other news, the health of our students, faculty, and staff is tantamount to the health of this institution, and I urge you all to take notice of the H1N1 pandemic updates that are being sent to you on a regular basis. Thank you to Vice President for Student Services Lise Telson, Campus Police Chief Harry Parmer, and Student Health Center Director Brenda Frame for their leadership in establishing plans to ensure that the college is prepared if and when our population is affected by the flu. More information follows to ensure that you are all up to speed with our preparations.
Finally, in lighter news, I was delighted to welcome our community to our campus over the past couple of months, including Family Night, the Homecoming Football Game, the K-12 Partnership Breakfast, and the President's Annual State of the College Breakfast. It is events like these that help us foster partnerships with our community that will help us better inform our public of our offerings, encourage attendance by prospective students, and establish relationships that will help bring in additional resources. It is when we can provide a top-notch education, offer outstanding student services, and establish stronger ties with our community that we can be truly successful.
Again, thank you for all you do each day for our students and I wish you all the best in the remainder of the fall semester.
Sincerely,

Tod A. Burnett, Ed.D.
President

Saddleback College Prepares for Flu Pandemic
Under the direction of Dr. Burnett, Vice President for Student Services Lise Telson, Chief of Police Harry Parmer, and Director of the Student Health Center Brenda Frame, RN, have led a campus-wide effort to closely monitor all communications from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and update college employees and students on H1N1 virus precautions and health recommendations. Extensive information on the H1N1 virus pandemic can be found on the Student Health Center website and a "Health Alerts" link has been placed on the college's home page that leads directly to information on H1N1 influenza provided by the CDC and Orange County Health Care Agency (OCHCA).
To prepare the college in the event that the pandemic affects our operations, the college has stockpiled masks, gloves, and Tamiflu, and National Incident Management System (NIMS)/State Emergency Management System (SEMS)
training sessions have been provided for management and classified staff. Chief Harry Parmer hosted a Train the Trainer workshop sponsored by the State Chancellor's Office and during the month of September, the Management Council implemented a pandemic table top exercise that had been developed only two days earlier by the Disaster Resistant California Community College Pandemic Influenza Taskforce.
The Student Health Center has developed physician-sanctioned standing orders for Tamiflu, an internal communication telephone tree, and plans for additional assistance from medical and nursing personnel if the Health Center becomes overwhelmed with H1N1 patients. Alternate work schedules for staff nurses, substitute nurses, physicians, and counseling interns have been developed, and discussions have taken place with Health Sciences and Human Services Dean Donna Rane-Szostak, Ed.D. as nursing faculty are needed to help in the Student Health Center, which is a point of contact for Tamiflu distribution, if needed.
E-mail and telephone reports on absenteeism are being monitored so that an increase in influenza activity can be identified, prompting notification to OCHCA for assistance.
H1N1 vaccines are expected to arrive on campus soon and will be provided free of charge to the campus community. The campus community will be notified as soon as the vaccines are available.
For updates on the H1N1 virus, visit the Student Health Center's Health Alerts page.

Larry Perez Donates Teacher of the Year Winnings to Osher Scholarship Fund
At the Orange County Teachers of the Year Gala held October 24th at the Disneyland Hotel, Saddleback College Mathematics Professor Larry Perez was recognized as Orange County’s Community College Professor of the Year, a title bestowed to him by the Orange County Department of Education in May 2009. Accompanying Professor Perez at the gala were Saddleback College President Tod A. Burnett, Ed.D.; South Orange County Board of Trustees President Donald P. Wagner; Trustee Nancy Padberg; Chancellor Raghu P. Mathur, Ed.D.; Saddleback College Dean of Mathematics, Science, and Engineering James Wright, Ph.D; and Algebra2Go Team Members Patrick Quigley, an associate professor of mathematics at Saddleback College, and Candice Harrington, a math instructor at Capistrano Valley High School and a former student of Professor Perez.
Professor Perez was one of five educators and the only community college professor to be named Teacher of the Year among 60 finalists nominated by school districts, community colleges, and private schools in Orange County. The five Teachers of the Year were each awarded $15,000 by Bill and Sue Gross through the Dr. James Hines Foundation. With his prize money Professor Perez donated $10,000 to the Saddleback College Foundation for the Bernard Osher Endowment, which helps financially strained students pay for their college educations. With a promised match from the endowment a $20,000 scholarship fund will be established for developmental mathematics students. Saddleback College is challenged to raise $671,000, and with the Osher matching funds our total endowment could be as much as $1,342,000.
Professor Perez stated, “I am humbled by this honor and thank my colleagues and students who deserve all the credit for my success. Teaching is a true love of mine and I am lucky to work with such an extraordinary group of people who value an environment that places the success of our students first.”
Dr. Burnett stated, “Congratulations to Professor Perez, who inspires us each day with his tremendous teaching skills and innovative online tools to help students succeed at math. Larry is another example of our outstanding Saddleback College faculty who are dedicated to helping our students learn and grow. I also extend my sincere thanks to Professor Perez who has generously donated $10,000 of his winnings to the Saddleback College Foundation to establish a scholarship fund for developmental mathematics students.”
Board President Donald P. Wagner stated, “I am thrilled for Professor Perez, an outstanding instructor who truly deserves this honor. Through Algebra2Go and other resources he has created, Professor Perez helps students realize their potential in what is often their most frustrating subject. Professor Perez is an inspiration to his students and colleagues and we are lucky to have him at Saddleback College.”
Dr. Wright stated, “I have known Larry since I was on his hiring committee in 1999 and it has been a pleasure to work with him. He is a wonderful professor and his students consistently rave about his warmth and willingness to help them completely understand his subject. It is no surprise that he has been named Orange County’s Community College Professor of the Year.”
The Orange County Teacher of the Year award is sponsored by the Disneyland Resort, the Orange County Register, and the Schools First Credit Union. To read about Professor Perez and his fellow Teacher of the Year finalists in the Orange County Register, click here.

Nursing Program Spotlighted in Orange Coast Magazine, Paramedic Program Sends off 26 Grads
We all know that our nursing program is fantastic. But did you know:
That our nursing program was chosen as one of nine nursing programs in the United States to be included in the study of teaching and learning in nursing by the Carnegie Foundation?
That 95 percent of our nursing graduates are employed as registered nurses within six months of graduation?
That our nursing pass rates on the National Council Licensure Examination exceed both state and national averages?
It is these reasons and more that earned Saddleback College's Nursing Department a coveted page in the October issue of Orange Coast Magazine's "Tribute to Nurses."
Congratulations to our oustanding nursing faculty and administrators for their work in this achievement!

Human Services Department Hosts 19th Annual Red Ribbon Career Fair
Saddleback College held its 19th Annual Red Ribbon Criminal Justice/Substance Abuse Career Fair on Wednesday, O ctober 28th in the campus quad. Approximately 50 agencies representing law enforcement, corrections, substance abuse treatment and prevention, and mental health provided information and resources as well as career opportunities for students. The event was co-sponsored by the Saddleback College Human Services Department and the Associated Student Government. Faculty Spotlight
Professor Walter DeAguero, Accounting Department Chair
Accounting Department Chair Walter DeAguero has been teaching at Saddleback College since 1984, and says that it feels like he's worked here for only five years instead of 26. His love of teaching and the friendships he's made with colleagues from across the college have made working here a rewarding and cherished experience for him.
Walt's career in education started as a young man after a friend recommended teaching when Walt was unahppy working as an accountant in the private sector. He took his friend's advice and fell in love with teaching after his first classroom experience at Santa Monica College. Walt left Southern California while he taught at McKendree College, a small four-year liberal arts college in the midwest, where he was named Teacher of the Year in 1983. A native of Southern California, Walt welcomed the chance to return to the area after accepting a position at Saddleback College.
As a professor, Walt believes an important function of the job is to encourage students to do what they love, even if that means that they gravitate toward subjects other than accounting. On his office wall, Walt has a framed card from a former student who thanked him for his dedication, inspiration, and contribution to his students, and Walt says that it's things like this that remind him why he teaches.
Accounting Professor Tony Teng says of his colleage,"Walt has been a colleague, role model, mentor, and friend to so many of us for the past 25 years. His dedication to the students and community is an example for all of us appreciate and follow."
As an instructor, Walt believes that it's important for his students to feel connected to him and realize that he's approachable. Thus, on his website, Walt provides information on university business schools, financial news, and an instructor profile providing his resume and favorite books, films, and cities. Walt's website was created using the college's standard website template and likes that he's been able to personalize it to best suit his needs and the needs of his students. Walt worked with Webmaster Rob Hartman and Application Specialist II Jan Mastrangelo in setting up his website and appreciates their work.
