Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS) is proud to offer College Access and Preparation (CAP), an orientation process specifically designed to support high school seniors with disabilities in their transition to college. This includes students who have received services such as Special Education/IEPs, RSP, 504 Plans, Directed Services, and/or Modified Classes.
The primary goal of College Access and Preparation is to ensure that students are well-prepared for their first semester at Saddleback College. As part of this process, students will complete their DSPS accommodations appointment to establish academic support.
As students transition from K-12 to college, their roles and responsibilities change significantly. Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), responsibility for identifying and supporting a student’s disability is shared between the parent and the school, with a focus on ensuring student success. Services may include evaluation, remediation, modifications, accommodations, personal services, and transportation.
In higher education, however, these responsibilities shift directly to the student. Under Title 5, students must independently apply for DSPS services, provide their own disability documentation, identify their needs, and self-advocate. Accommodations are designed to provide equal access to education and must not fundamentally alter course requirements or instruction. Additionally, personal services and transportation are the responsibility of the student.
To apply to DSPS, follow steps outlined on the DSPS homepage.
Although there is no deadline to apply for DSPS services, students are strongly encouraged to submit their application and disability verification documentation well in advance. Completing this process early helps ensure that accommodations are in place by the first day of classes and encourages students to begin the semester with confidence.
