Every February, the U.S. honors and celebrates the history, contributions, and sacrifices of Black Americans during Black History Month. Black History Month was created in 1926 by Black historian Carter G. Woodson and later formally recognized nationwide in 1976 by President Gerald R. Ford. Every year, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) selects a theme for Black History Month. The theme for 2026 is A Century of Black History Commemorations.
The Saddleback College Student Development Office and Multicultural Center have a variety of events planned to engage students, faculty, staff, and the community during Black History Month. If you are able, please join us for one or more events. All are welcome.
Campus Events
2%: A Celebration of Black Artistry
February 5 through April 24 on the 3rd floor of the LRC
Opening Reception: Friday, February 6 from 5 to 8 p.m.
2% calls attention to the scarcity of Black representation in Orange County and in the art world more broadly. While acknowledging this structural absence, the exhibition honors artists whose work asserts presence, depth, and influence beyond their numbers. The title marks both a reality and an invitation—to look more closely, to recognize what is too often overlooked, and to expand the space in which these voices can be seen.
The exhibit is viewable on the 3rd floor of the LRC during regular Library hours of Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
